Westfield Miranda Turns 60!
Earlier this year the iconic Westfiled Miranda (perviously known as Miranda Fair) celebrated its 60th birthday. Like many Westfield centres, both in Australia and overseas, MPN has been part of its on-going development since the beginning.
Miranda Fair was officially opened on 16th of March 1964 by then Premier of New South Wales Bob Heffron. Developed by Myer and Farmers, and designed by architects Tomkins, Shaw & Evans, Miranda Fair sported a modern/futuristic look and when it opened was the largest fully enclosed shopping centre in NSW.
In 1969 the Westfield Corporation purchased Miranda Fair from Myer for $10 million. Following the purchase Westfield lodged plans with Sutherland Council to expand the centre, doubling its size. In September 1971, the expansion was completed and Miranda Fair was renamed to Westfield Shoppingtown Miranda.
Over the years, the centre has been expanded and redeveloped many times. Office towers have been built, used and then taken down. There’s been many car park additions, retail space reconfigurations and centre modifications, and MPN has been there throughout.
In recent years MPN was commissioned by Westfield to undertake the detailed design and subsequent inspections for the structural works of their $475 million redevelopment. The project consisted of two new levels of car parking over the existing structure, alterations to the existing structure including infilling retail voids and inserting new loading docks, ramps into the existing structure and a new precinct consisting of three levels of basement parking, four retail levels and a steel cinema and roof structure.
